Kingston police cells to take Richmond suspects

Richmond police station is considering closing its cells and moving its detectives in with their Kingston counterparts.
Richmond and Kingston have been working together for several years to find somewhere to put a bigger joint custody suite for criminal suspects.
After Teddington police station was ruled out, investment was found to build behind Kingston police station.
Chief Inspector David Gair said: “I can confirm that the co-location of Richmond and Kingston CID is one of a number of options currently being discussed in relation to providing support for the new twenty cell custody suite at Kingston in early 2013.
“As part of the Metropolitan Police Service's delivery plan, Richmond custody is likely to close and custody requirements for both Kingston and Richmond will be delivered by the new Kingston-based suite.
“However, no final decision has been made at this stage.”
Kingston police station is set to be emptied and refurbished floor by floor from March with officers and staff decanted before moving back in when work is complete.
